RESERVOIR (Resources and Services Virtualization without Barriers) is a joint research effort of 13 academic and commercial organizations in Europe led by IBM to develop "cloud computing" technologies. The emerging cloud computing paradigm for hosting web-based services, as best exemplified by the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) or Google’s App Engine, aims to facilitate the creation of innovative internet scale services without worrying about the computational infrastructure needed to support these services.
In RESERVOIR, we are developing system and service technologies that will serve as the infrastructure for the deployment of complex services on a compute cloud that spans infrastructure providers and even geographies, while ensuring QoS and security guarantees. This will be achieved through the coupling of virtualization, grid computing, and business service management techniques.
My role in the project involves the specification of a language to enable service providers to control the deployment of and management of their services on a cloud computing platform. The service definition manifest will describe the overall software architecture: components, hardware and software requirements, service level agreements and other characteristics that must be provided in order to ensure the correct provisioning of services.
