When the Lighthouse is Dark Between Flashes: Looking as a Reductive or Vast Experience

This is my M.A. Fine Art report which I wrote during my second and final year at the Slade School of Fine Art. By briefly discussing how the notion of the observer has changed through modernity, I investigate how the act of looking might be understood in the 21st century. By showing how ideas of looking co-exists with and developes parallel to the Western consumer culture, I demonstrate how looking is associated with the superficial, the spectacular and as a quick and efficient consumerist mode of enquiry, by the way it is reduced to function as a means of achieving measurable results and confirming already existing ideas and expectations.
