Case studies

Cultural Heritage/Education application

As part of the first scenario, the users of the environment will reconstruct an archaeological site. The specific task will involve the reconstruction of a temple, which the users will virtually "build" parts of it, beginning with a photo-realistic model of the site as it is today and adding elements, piece by piece, in order to explore, make judgements, examine alternative scenarios or experiment with different possibilities and complete the final reconstruction.

The selected site is the ancient city of Messini, founded in 369 BC and located in the SW Peloponnese on a site inhabited from at least the 8th century BC. Within this site, the case study of CREATE will focus on the architectural complex of the Asklepieion (sanctuary of Asclepius), and in particular on the Doric temple which is located in its very centre. The Doric temple represents one of the latest examples of the order and is poorly preserved but very well documented. The ongoing excavations, carried out by the subcontractor, provide us with supplementary documentation that is currently being studied for the scenario design.

Urban/Architectural Planning & Design Application

As part of the second scenario, a transport planning/architecture application is chosen, in which decision makers and local inhabitants can investigate alternative designs and evaluate their effect on the environment.

The selected site is in Nice, France where another real project, the development of the Nice Tramway, is currently underway. The city officials and engineers have been contacted and detailed information about the Nice Tramway project has been obtained. The scenarios mainly involve transport modelling and planning choices for the placement of the tram stop, the pedestrian crossings, the placement of traffic lights and their duration, and accessibility issues.
