The budget estimates given below are on a yearly basis for a three year period, and are for the Network of Excellence as a whole (excluding funding for non-EU network nodes which will, as discussed above, be derived from other sources as and when required). This budget is based on our programme of activities and has been adjusted to reflect the experience of existing Networks of Excellence. We are confident it forms a realistic base for the activities planned. In Table 3 we show the budget with details of planned expenditure by category. In Table 4 we show the expenditure by activity (covering all budget categories). The budget provided is initial and indicative. The Executive Board will provide a detailed budget updated on a 6-monthly basis during the project. Within the constraints of the overall budget the Executive Committee may reallocate expenditure between categories and activities.

Notes on budget headings:
(a) Labour - to cover the costs of network staff employed at the nodes for the performance of tasks assigned to them by the Executive Board.
(b) Travel and Subsistence - to cover costs of attendance by Network staff at Network meetings and in support of the Network activities.
(c) Durable Equipment - to cover the costs to the nodes of providing the additional equipment for local communications and network infrastructure needs and for the use of staff involved in the network.
(d) Other costs - to cover the additional costs to the nodes of providing services to the Network such as: consumables; equipment maintenance; publicity; fax; telephones; copying, and so on.
