Welcome to the Department of Computer Science!

All MSc CSML Students will take the Statistics Foundation Course, which begins on Monday 15th September 2008. Lectures begin on Thursday 25th September 2008.  Please see below for further details or email us if you have any questions.

Schedule for new MSc CSML Students

Please Note: On the first day of registration, you should come to the Department of Computer Science which is in the Malet Place Engineering Building (MPEB). Click here for directions to the Department of Computer Science.

After initial registration on the Monday morning, the majority of lectures will be held in the Statistics Department, 1-19 Torrington Place. Click here for directions to the Department of Statistics.

The foundation course will consist of sessions as indicated below.  These sessions will be based mainly on the books Mathematical Statistics and Data Analysis by J A Rice and Introduction to Probability Models by S M Ross. Students should all have a copy of the former.  Most sessions will consist of an informal introductory revision lecture, individual exercises and/or group discussion of examples. 

Morning sessions are from 10AM - 1PM with a break at about 11-11.30AM.  Afternoon sessions will generally be from 2.30PM - 5PM with a break at 3.30 - 4PM. We will arrange to have refreshments available in room 146 of the Statistics Department in the first week.  


Please make sure you are on time to avoid missing important information.

Joining UCL Action Checklist


Before Arrival

  • Make sure your accommodation is organised.
  • Be vaccinated against meningitis. All students admitted to universities in the UK are advised to be vaccinated.
  • Open a bank account (although you may have to wait until after you have enrolled and have evidence that you are a student).
  • If required, obtain a student visa and appropriate entry clearance. If you are here for less than 6 months and would like to be involved in volunteering, you need to apply for a full student visa. Please see www.ucl.ac.uk/transition/joining-ucl/international-students for further details on immigration and entitlement to work.
  • If you are traveling from abroad, arrange to have sufficient money transferred to a bank account accessible from the UK.
  • Send your LEA financial notification letter or, if appropriate, overseas sponsorship details to UCL’s Student Fees Office.
  • Arrange to have your post redirected from home.
  • Tell family and friends what your term-time address will be.
  • If you have a disability and need adjustments to be made and/or support to be put into place when you come to UCL, contact the UCL Disability Centre as soon as possible.
  • If you do not already know how to, take a crash course in basic cooking, using a washing machine, ironing!

After Arrival

  • Buy a map of London (one that includes a street index).
  • Report to your department as instructed.
  • Enrol at UCL.
  • If you are an international student, attend the special Orientation Programme for International Students.
  • Register with a doctor, either at the UCL Health Centre or at another doctors’ surgery.
  • Register with UCL’s Library and Information Systems (to obtain a UCL computing network ID). You can obtain information on doing so when you enrol.
  • Decide which optional modules you wish to study
  • Register your module selections online using Portico (www.ucl.ac.uk/portico).
  • Attend the UCL Students’ Union Freshers’ Fayre.
  • If you have a disability (including dyslexia) register with the UCL Disability Centre.
  • Check the TERM DATES for this year and put them in your diary. 
  • Find out a bit about UCL and it's 180 year history!
