From: The Cognitive Science Society To: Richard M Young Date: Fri, 22 Feb 2002 21:54:26 (GMT) Subject: Call for International Conference Proposals Call for Two International Conferences of the Cognitive Science Society The Governing Board of the Society voted last year to hold conferences in Europe on a regular basis. Specifically, our main conference will be on a four year cycle, being in North America for three years, and then in Europe for one year. Additionally, there will be a regional European conference the same year as the North American conference in the second year of the four-year cycle. Given that our last conference was in Edinburgh, this means that a regional European conference will occur during 2003, the same year that we hold the main conference in Boston. Furthermore the next main conference in Europe will be in 2005. The Events Committee of the Society invites proposals for the 2003 regional conference in Europe, and for the 2005 main conference in Europe. Please note that the Cognitive Science Society can now provide the following infrastructure for conferences: * online talk and paper submission software * online reviewing software * online registration software * web site support for the conference Proposals for a conference should contain the requested below information. We realize that it may be impossible to provide fully complete answers to all of the questions below, and we don't mean to discourage proposals that may be lacking some details. Nevertheless our ability to make informed decisions will obviously benefit from as much information as possible. 1. Please indicate whether the proposal is for the regional or international conference. Also provide the dates of the conference. Please comment on conflicts with other meetings or lack thereof. Note that the 2003 regional meeting should be offset as far as possible from the 2003 main conference at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel from July 30 to August 3. 2. Please describe the site of the conference, and the facilities available. Include information about meeting rooms, audio-visual equipment, lodging, food, and local transportation. Also include information about the ease and cost of reaching the site from around the world (international conference) or from within Europe (regional conference). 3. Who will the main organizers of the conference be? Note that the organizers in conjunction with the Society's Events Committee will create a specific program committee for each conference. 4. What will the costs of the conference be? Where will funds needed for the conference come from? What registration fees will be charged attendees? Note that the Cognitive Science Society can provide a half-time staff person to help with the main conference but not for the regional one (eventually we hope to help staff both). Also the Society typically provides $10,000 support for the main conference, but we can't yet afford to do so for the regional one. 5. Will there be any theme(s) for the conference? If what will they be, and how will they attract cognitive scientists internationally (main conference) or in Europe (regional conference)? If you plan to target specific groups of cognitive scientists, as opposed to the general membership, which groups do you aim to attract? Please note that, in general, the Society aims to attract members across ALL segments of the cognitive science community, not just particular subgroups. Thus not having any themes may be desirable over having them. If there are themes, it will be critical to show that they do not preclude attracting a broad range of cognitive scientists. 6. Please provide any additional information that you think might be useful in evaluating your proposal. Send proposals electronically to Larry Barsalou (barsalou@emory.edu). There is no deadline for proposals. However we will begin evaluating proposals April 1, 2002, and hope to resolve at least the 2003 conference soon thereafter, so that the organizers have sufficient time to implement it. ***************************************************** Lawrence W.
