Minutes of BT MMN URI Meeting held at UCL on 21/3/96 Deliverables ============ Jon Crowcroft reminded everyone of what deliverables are due. Work package Progress ===================== Each partner outlined progress over the last 3 months. IC (Nat Pryce) outlined their work: rewriting Regis; providing an object oriented backend to the Darwin compiler and using Darwin in their configurable protocol stack work. UCL (James Cowan) outlined their work: QoS monitoring spec due shortly; winsock monitored stack almost working. Jon Crowcroft discussed the recent Internet draft on RSVP accounting and access and the work of Ipsilon an ATM/IP router hybrid manufacturer. Lancaster (Geoff Coulson) outlined their work: work on QoS notation using formal specification languages such as QL and LOTOS; design on integrating multimedia streams into CORBA is proceeding. Loughborough (Iain Phillips and David Parish) outlined their progress: their test station is deployed at Walsall, JAVA is being used to plot graphs on the WWW; patent application in progress. LUT is dropping "Technology" from its name. Cambridge (Paul Wernick) outlined their work on security: on the GSS API, on the problem of dangling connections; they are considering using a policy language interpreter to provide generic authentication mechanisms. OBU (Sheila Lloyd Lyons, Hua Chang and Xu Hui Chang) described the final work being done in their current work plan comparing their Simula and BT's Bones simulation of ABR service and investigation of a new rate allocation algorithm. They plan to move into ATM/RSVP signalling. Ian Marshall requested that partners make more use of the mail exploder to advertise documents. Management issues ================= Contract issues --------------- These are now sorted out. Invoices -------- Some Universities are not invoicing BT - Ian asked if finance departments could invoice asap. Ukerna / JISC issues -------------------- Current situation with use of ATM network for research is that partners (IC, UCL and Cambs) that currently need access to an ATM research network have enough resources and the London MAN will provide enough in the future. In the next procurement for SuperJanet LUT, Lancaster, LUT and OBU should be provided access and priority to ATM switches. Later in the meeting this request was put to Ron Rogerson who said that Universities should put forward a "shopping list" of their requirements. OBU's new work plan ------------------- Sheila Lloyd Lyons described their proposed new work plan on inter-operability between ATM signalling and Internet RSVP resource reservation. They plan to start in December though BT expressed a preference for an earlier start date. Relationship with centres of excellence --------------------------------------- Simon Ritchie stated that the BT MMN URI was not to be used formally as part of these initiatives, though equipment may be used as long as it does not compromise the project. He also asked that if Universities wanted BT to "uncle" a proposal (eg MNA), they should do so well in advance of the deadline. AOB === Coseners multiservice workshop 30/31 May Globecom 18/22 November Meetings ======== June 13th at OBU Sept 19th at Lancaster Breakout sessions ================= The meeting divided after lunch into different groups. UCL/ LU and Rob Davison and Mick Mulvey (BT) discussed monitoring. Main result of this discussion was that we would write up ideas for a possible proposal to MNA. Minutes from other groups done separately (Nat Pryce provided notes on CORBA and multimedia streams discussion in a separate emal).
