Meeting on Managing BT Research on Managing Multiservice Networks ---------------------------------------------------------------- Attendance Tony Bence, BT Les Clyne, UKERNA Bob Cooper, UKERNA Jon Crowcroft, UCL James Cowan, UCL Purpose To agree the methods for access to SuperJANET, and to its management functions by the partners of the BT funded project (partners = Cambridge CL, Imperial DOC, Lancaster CS, Loughborough, Oxford Brookes, UCL CS). ------------------------------------------------------- Agenda ------ WP1 Configuration management. WP2 Policy based Traffic Management WP3 End system QoS management. WP4 Traffic monitoring and Measurement. WP5 Security. Interactions with: UKERNA JISC Edinburgh Netcomm Other ATM Projects (Video, LAN, End system, PNO) Problem reporting/response & Red Flag Mechanisms ------------------------------------------------------- Desired Outcome Access to the ATM and SMDS net for experimental traffic Access to monitoring functions in switches and routers Methods for Connection of experimental switches and routers Possible Interaction with Management functions of ATM switches ------------------------------------------------------- Minutes ------- Les Clyne reported on the current status of the SuperJANET ATM configuration, PDH plans, End System and LAN pilots and so forth. Slides available from Les. We then went through the workpackages to ascertain the requirements for SMDS, PDH or ATM attachment, and for traffic. We addressed year 1 requirements only at this stage. The basic conclusions/actions are that 1. For WP 2 and 5, we will initially use VP for UCL/CAM/IC (2 out of 3 sites for initial experiments). Bandwidth to be determined, but request 10Mbps. When we demonstrate the bandwidth requirement for more than this, as well as the requirement for control of traffic behaviour on the full path, we will move to attaching switches at 2 out of the 3 sites to 34Mbps PDH, around 4th quarter 94, and thereafter to 3 sites, in a line, with either IC or Cam in the 'middle'. 2. We will provide the SMDS managers with traffic profile estimations for the experiments that WP 3&4 may carry out. 3. Les will provide us with any contacts for ATM site and managers. This to include Edinburgh ATM and Video contact info (name/phone/fax/email and booking guide etc), and SMDS contact people. 4. If we start direct liaison with Netcomm/GDC (or suppliers in similar position), we will copy Les on anything, but obviously not imply any official SuperJANET approach. 5. We will invite Bob & Les to any management meetings, and also give them information from WP that may be useful (e.g. non-results from kit!), although we reserve the right to have private sections of management meetings. 6. Les will coordinate on liason about interference later in year 1 of the project between our work here, and the PNO pilot work. Note that towards the end of year 1, the SDH rollout will be happening, which should also make configurations for experimentation easier. Crowcroft thanked everyone for a very constructive meeting.
