Student
projects currently offered for supervision by John Dowell
1. Develop
a prototype mobile guide for visitors at a science museum.
A current research project is studying the needs of museum visitors. A
prototype is needed for use in a field trial to examine personalization of user
interfaces for mobile guides. The guide needs to be able to recognize which
kind of visitor is using the app by collecting and interpreting their
interaction data; it needs to adapt the user interface accordingly.
2. User
modelling function for personalization of a mobile news app.
Investigate use of ML methods with data from users’
interactions with a news app (already built in our lab) to produce a user
modelling service that makes predictions about the users’ preferences for
content types and user interface features/services.
3. Smart
notification management for mobile users. The project will use an existing data
set of users’ responses to notifications and examine the use of learning methods
to model notification policies for individuals that reduce unwanted
interruptions.
