Dan Andrei Calian

Engineering Doctorate Candidate at UCL

I am an EngD student in Computer Graphics at University College London.

I am supervised by Prof. Jan Kautz (UCL/NVIDIA) and Prof. Kenny Mitchell (Disney Research).

I am also working with Prof. Tim Weyrich (UCL) and Dr. Derek Nowrouzezahrai (Université de Montréal).

Previously, I completed my undergraduate degree in Computer Science with AI at the University of Nottingham, graduating first in my year.

I'm currently investigating specialised light probes, for achieving "context-aware" augmented reality experiences.

Most recently, I completed an internship at Disney Research in Pittsburgh, working with Iain Matthews, Jean-François Lalonde and Tomas Simon Kreuz. Previously, I completed a short internship at Disney Research in Edinburgh, under Kenny Mitchell's guidance. In my first year at UCL I worked on Underwater Rendering in Augmented Reality.

I have also worked on the Automatic Joint Modelling for Printing Articulated Models group project. We looked at embedding functional joints in 3D models such that they can be 3D printed without requiring any assembly, with our paper being accepted at SIGGRAPH Asia 2012.

Previously, as part of a 2nd year undergraduate research internship and my final year dissertation, I have worked on developing, integrating and analysing the performance of memetic algorithms for the BioHEL evolutionary learning system, while being supervised by Dr. Jaume Bacardit. Our resulting paper has been published in the Memetic Computing journal.

I am or have been a teaching assistant for the following courses:

3D Computer Graphics (3080/GV10, Autumn 2012/2013)

VEIV Summer School on 3D Design & Fabrication (10-14th June 2013)

Other Projects

I used to spend my free time developing PC/Android games. Previously, I have developed a Rubik's cube game, a Backgammon game complete with AI, a reverse space invader game, a "circling rabbit" game, etc. These games, and some other potentially useful small pieces of software were available at my old website, before the web host got hacked. If you would like the binaries, let me know. Recently, I was trying to find spare time to work on Drag a Dragon so that it might eventually be released for Android/iOS.

I have also been helping Prof. Tolga Zafer Ozdemir, a professor/composer with the coding for his Tritonet virtual MIDI instrument: click here for some music.
