Notes for Papers on Haptic Interfaces

Paper 1: Klatzky & Lederman (2002)

This paper covers the state of art for the sense of touch. From a description of the physiology of the human touch to the last application research, going through haptic perception and memory. To be read just for background the sections from 1 to 4. Good reading for the sections 5 and 6, which describe basic haptic concepts. Pay attention to the section 7, especially the point D about 3D objects. The courseis oriented to the VE, so the section 8 is very important to understand some problems in merging haptic and graphics. Section 9 provides a good overview of research applications.

Paper 2: Ruspini et al. (1997)

This paper describes the problem to design coherent haptic and graphic environments. It’s old but shows a basic approach of the haptic control. The student has to concentrate his reading on the first 4 sections. Section 5 is good to read to understand old but basic design of a haptic surface. Sections 6 and following are good to see a system 7 years old, but the student don’t need to go in detail.

Paper 3: Hayward et al. (2004)

This paper provides a description of the components of the haptic interfaces and gives an overview on the current device designs.  The student has to cover the whole paper, so he can have a good idea of the state of art in the haptic field from the point of view of the hardware. No technical skills are required.
