The database of subscribers to this newsletter is growing at an alarming rate, with a very large proportion of new subscribers drawn from industry. To all these new subscribers a warm welcome to the RE community. In the last couple of months I have not received as many interesting items as usual but I felt I ought to produce another issue to clear the backlog. Next issue I hope to provide the abstracts of the papers from the Requirements Engineering: Foundations of Software Quality Workshop which I anticipate being of wide general interest. I am very keen to receive worthwhile items particularly announcements of new Technical Reports (an example of the sort of thing I am looking for is given below). The newsletter is only as good as the material you send me. Anthony ********************************************************************** The following technical report, likely to be of interest to RE Newsletter subscribers, is available from ftp.sei.cmu.edu as /pub/../public/documents/93.reports/tr12.93.ps title: AMORE: The Advanced Multimedia Organizer for Requirements Elicitation author: Christel, M., Wood, D., Stevens, S. number: CMU/EI-93-TR-12, ADA268058 abstract: The advent of larger and more complex software systems has resulted in the need to reconsider the ways in which information pertaining to those systems is stored, visualized, organized, and retrieved. The Software Engineering Information Modeling Project of the Software Engineering Institute is integrating existing and new technologies with the intent of demonstrating feasible technical directions for modeling and managing large amounts of data in multiple media formats. This paper introduces the Advanced Multimedia Organizer for Requirements Elicitation (AMORE), a system that embodies a synthesis of technologies adapted specifically for application to requirements elicitation processes and models. ********************************************************************** From: dsr@research.att.com (David S. Applications are invited from candidates who are enthusiastic about the training of hybrid managers with both IT and management skills. Expertise and interest in Business Process Re-engineering, Information Management, Computerised Decision Support and Enterprise Modelling and Integration would be particularly welcomed. Commencing salary will be within the scale: #163#13,601 - #163#25,107 per annum. Requests for applications forms, quoting reference COM/A1 should be sent to: The Personnel office, UMIST, PO Box 88, Manchester, M60 1QD. Completed application forms should be returned by 3oth June 1994. The new Lecturer will be a research scholar with a distinct teaching role. On the teaching side, the department currently has two single honours degrees, BSc Computation and BSc Information Engineering, where management, the provision of IT to support management, and the management of IT are extensively covered. It is expected that the new Lecturer will support and enhance the current courses in this area as well as play a leading role in a new degree course being planned at the interface area between computers and management. On the research side, the department is seeking a scholar with higher degrees and publications in the broad areas of Decision Support Technology, Enterprise Modelling and Integration, Business Process Re-engineering and Information Management. A numerate background and experience in developing computerised aids to support the above would be a distinct advantage. Papers to further elaborate topics "c" and "d" are being prepared in good form, and will be distributed with the full minutes of the meeting, along with other meeting documents distributed. A March 22, 1994 paper prepared for topic "e" is attached here. (Background information on the WG11 project may be found in the attachments to the November 1993 P1175 meeting.) The two proposed work items contained were accepted for the P1175 workplan during the next 18 months. Results from this meeting were conveyed to the June 8 coordination meeting among P1175, CDIF, WG11, PDES/STEP, IRDS, and PCTE. Actions were assigned for deliverables in preparation for the next scheduled P1175 meeting, October 17-18, 1994 in Tysons' Corner, Virginia, near Washington DC (subject to confirmation). March 22, 1994 Peter Eirich PROPOSED PROGRAM OF JOINT WORK for IEEE-CS P1175 with ISO-IEC JTC1/SC7/WG11 (NOTE: This does not list the complete program of work for P1175, only those tasks that also contibute directly to the international standardization work in WG11 comparable to 1175.) 1. COMPILE HIGH-LEVEL MODEL OF SOFTWARE ENGINEERING CONCEPTS Create an overall, high-level model diagram to cover and integrate elements from several alternative models, including: a. IEEE-CS 1175-1991 b. IEEE-CS 1175 extensions for OO c. EIA CDIF Subject Area models (primarily Common and Data, plus the highest-level elements only from the application-oriented subject areas) d. Basic Elements set of documents from WG11 e. DXL documents from WG11 f. OO concept documents from US X3H7 committee Where an obvious reconciliation of differences is not possible, document the nature of the differences, and any recommendations as to a resolution, to be addressed within WG11 as necessary. Prepare a document in international format to describe the model. This is anticipated to be used first as a planning document for WG11 subject areas scope boundaries and priorities, and, later, as a balloted international technical report. It will therefore help guide the evolution of the multi-part WG11 set of international standards for software engineering data exchange among tools and repositories. 2. DOCUMENT 1175-STYLE HUMAN-READABLE SYNTAX WITHIN THE WG11 FRAMEWORK Convert the STL syntax description into two separate documents using an international document format. A syntax document, will describe the structure of the language syntax itself. A second, the encoding document, will describe how elements from WG11 subject area models are mapped into variables of the syntax in order to create an exchange file for a particular model. The objective is to construct a human-readable, machine-parsable textual description of an information model. Reference inputs will include the draft of the WG11 modeling notation. **********************************************************************
