Preliminary note: The proceedings of the conference (in Spanish) can be ordered from "Departamento de Informática: Lenguajes y Sistemas Informáticos, Universidad de Murcia, Campus de Espinardo 30071, Espinardo, Murcia (Spain). The editors are José Ambrosio Toval and Joaquín Nicolás. More information -including the full program of the conference- may also be obtained at the URL: http://www.um.es/~giisw/jis98/

The 3rd National Spanish Conference on Software Engineering was held in Murcia (Spain), from November 11th to 13th 1998. This event was the consolidation of a national forum of meeting and exchange of experiences bringing together researchers, academics and practitioners in the Software Engineering field. The aims of the conference were: to establish collaboration links among different sectors, to share experiences and to show the ultimate research results of the attendants.

This conference tries to share experiences related to Software Engineering and Requirements Engineering coming from the Industry and the Academy. To attain this aim, the conference included three invited speakers, who were relevant experts in any of the interest areas of the conference, three panel sessions, and ten technical sessions to present original papers, showing the latest research and experiences in the area.

The first and second edition were held in Seville (1.996) and S. Sebastian (1997), where software engineering teachers, researchers and practitioners attended, mainly from Spain, Portugal, and other countries in South America. For this third edition of the conference, there were three groups of contributions:

 KEYNOTE SPEECHES

Robert Smith from ESI (European Software Institute) gave his lecture entitled "SPICE and Software Process Improvement: Current Practice".

Professor Stefano Ceri from Politecnico di Milano presented the latest trends on WEB Applications "Design Principles for Data-Intensive WEB Applications".

Professor José Meseguer and Francisco Durán from SRI (Stanford Research Institute), presented their lecture "Arquitecturas de Software desde una perspectiva formal" (Software Architectures from a formal perspective". Likewise the tool MAUDE presented by the same speakers was particularly interesting.

RESEARCH

Non-published papers corresponding to final results or on-going research, to explore and discuss research issues and topics with a particular focus on Requirements Engineering.

33 papers were selected, among the 64 papers sent out to the Program Committee. Each paper was reviewed by, at least, two members of the PC.

In order to use this conference also as a forum to inform about more stable research and work done by software engineers attending, some papers already published in prestigious reviews or presented in well-known international conferences were also included and discussed by their authors.

PANELS

In the panel entitled "doctoral theses", topics about how to carry out a Doctoral Thesis on Software Engineering were discussed: subjects, context (industrial or academic), attitudes and abilities, etc. After the presentation of the six abstracts of Doctoral Theses accepted, a panel discussion on the subject was held, chaired by Oscar Díaz, professor at the University of the Basque Country.

The panel discussion entitled "Dirección, gestión y planificación de proyectos" ("Project Management and planning ") was held, chaired by Francisco Sanchís, professor at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.

Another panel discussion "La Ingeniería del Software en las empresas españolas" ("Software Engineering in the Spanish Industry") was held, where the Spanish Industry in the context of Software Engineering was analysed. It was chaired by Idoia Alarcón, professor at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

This event brought together software engineers from industry, academia, and research centres, many of them specifically working in Requirements Engineering, thus giving the opportunity to exchange experiences and ideas through the regular sessions, invited lectures or conferences and informal discussions.

Researchers from three RENOIR nodes attended to the conference, namely from the Universities of Catalunya, Milano and Murcia). This conference has been so far, the best platform used by the Spanish RENOIR nodes in order to promote joint research activities in Requirements Engineering and it is expected that new editions will continue in the future, in particular the next edition will be held in Cáceres (Spain) http://webepcc.unex.es/jisbd99/
