S A B 9 6 ---------- CAMERA-READY FORMAT INSTRUCTIONS The basic format is two-column, 10-point type, on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper. This is obviously an American format, and people with American-style desktop publishing systems should have no difficulty. People with non-American style publishing systems may find it useful to know that a "point" is 1/72 inch. 10-point type is 10/72 inch high. Space, called "leading", is also needed between lines, and for 10-point type the leading is typically 1 or 2 points. (One inch = 2.54 cm.) CONTENT: PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE COMMENTS OF THE REVIEWERS. SHOW CLEARLY HOW YOUR WORK RELATES TO THE FIELD OF ADAPTIVE BEHAVIOR. DO YOUR BEST TO COMMUNICATE TO PEOPLE WHO MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH YOUR PARTICULAR FIELD, ESPECIALLY ITS MATHEMATICS AND JARGON. LENGTH: Format and/or cut your paper so it is not more than ten pages long, including all illustrations and references. COLUMN LAYOUT: Use two columns per page. On American-size paper, the column and margin dimensions are as follows: Column Width - 3.375 inch (86 mm) Column Height - 9.25 inch (235 mm) Left Margin - 0.75 inch (19 mm) Right Margin - 0.75 inch Gap between columns - 0.25 inch (6 mm) Top Margin - 1.0 inch (25 mm) Bottom Margin - 0.75 inch (19 mm) On European-size A4 (21 x 30 cm) paper, please format the page so that the above specifications hold, except at the Right and Bottom margins. >>>> N.B. MATERIAL EXTENDING INTO THE MARGINS WILL MAKE THE PAPER UNACCEPTABLE FOR PUBLICATION! BODY PARAGRAPHS: Use 10-point type in a clear, readable font (e.g., Times Roman), with 1 or 2 point leading. DO NOT use a typewriter-style font (e.g. Courier). Indent when starting a new paragraph, except after major headings. TITLE AND AUTHOR: Center the title on the entire width of the page. (European-size paper: center the title 4 1/4 inches (108 mm) from the left edge.) Use a 14- or 18-point bold font. Place the names of authors below the title in a 12-point bold font, and affiliations and complete addresses (including e-mail) directly below the author names in a 12-point non-bold font. (more) ABSTRACT: Place the abstract at the beginning of the first column approximately 3 inches (76 mm) from the top of the page. Use a slightly smaller column width than in the body of the paper. The heading "Abstract" should be centered above the body of the abstract in a 12-point bold font. SECTION HEADINGS: Print section headings in a 12-point bold type, and number them consecutively. Leave a blank space of approximately 10 points above and 8 points below the headings. If you use subheadings (e.g., "2.1"), print them in 12-point non-bold or italic. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS AND REFERENCES: These follow the main body of the text. Their headings are printed in the same style as Section Headings, but without a number. FOOTNOTES: These should be in 9-point type and separated from the column above by a line. Use sparingly. Do not violate the Bottom Margin! CITATIONS IN TEXT: Author's name and year, e.g., (Brooks, 1986), is preferred, but use the form you are most comfortable with. Check to be sure that references are complete and accurate. ILLUSTRATIONS: Place illustrations (figures, drawings, tables, and photographs) throughout the paper at the places where they are first discussed, rather than at the end of the paper. If placed at the bottom or top of a page, illustrations may run across both columns. Illustrations (e.g., photographs) may be attached to the page, but do so with glue stick, spray adhesive, or rubber cement; do not use transparent tape as the printing process blurs copy under transparent tape. Number illustrations sequentially (but number tables separately). Place illustration numbers and captions under the illustrations. Use 9-point type for captions. Do not allow illustrations or captions to extend into the margins or gap between columns (except that 2-column wide illustrations may cross the gap). PHOTOGRAPHS: Use only high quality black and white photographs. Color photographs do not reproduce well. IDENTIFICATION: Type or write your name on the BACK of every page. Number the pages sequentially, also on the BACK. This information is for identification only; final page numbers will be assigned by the publisher.
