GALESIA will emphasise the role of Evolutionary Computing and GAs, in particular, in engineering systems although the general scope on theory and applications will be retained. Co-sponsored by: Institute of Measurement and Control Institution of Mechanical Engineers Institute of Mathematics and its Applications British Computer Society International Federation of Automatic Control United Kingdom Automatic Control Council IEEE Control Systems Society IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society SCOPE The scope of the Conference includes, but is not limited, to - Innovations and Theory genetic operators and representations parallel genetic algorithms genetic algorithms for neural networks genetic programming evolution strategies classifier systems evolutionary programming mathematical techniques and analysis surveys and reviews (GAs in Engineering and Computer Science) biological aspects of GAs - Applications scheduling algorithms optimisation problems machine learning robotics biomedical manufacturing decision-making control systems aerospace automobiles process industry system identification signal processing vision systems/applications utilities: gas, water, electricity etc. civil engineering The Conference targets workers in the field of Engineering Systems or related fields in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, etc. Workers in other areas such as Biology, Psychology and Medicine are also welcomed. CONTRIBUTIONS Authors wishing to contribute to the Conference should send an original and four copies of each paper by 31 March 1995 to GALESIA'95 Secretariat, IEE Conference Services Savoy Place London WC2R 0BL United Kingdom with notification of acceptance by end of May 1995. Papers should be submitted on A4 sheets with a 2-column format. Each column is 6.69 cm in width with a spacing of 1.27 cm between columns. Text should be typed in 10 point Times-Roman font with single line spacing. The first page should incorporate (first line) the title, (double line space) author(s), (double line space), and affiliations (including e-mail address). Only six pages are allowed per paper (inclusive of figures, tables etc.), although further pages (maximum of 8 in total) may be considered, for an accepted paper, upon a charge of stg20.00 per page. Please contact the GALESIA Secretariat should you require a sample of the set layout. If presented in good quality suitable for camera-ready copying, successful contributions will be published from the original copy submitted in the first instance. Otherwise, authors will be requested to re-submit. All contributions will be published in a proceedings form to be available to all delegates at the event. In addition, extended versions of selected contributions will be published in book form following the event. DEADLINES Today Send the attached information slip 31 March 1995 Submission of 5 copies of paper(s) End of May 1995 Notification of Authors 30 June 1995 Final camera-ready copies (if applicable) 11 September 1995 Workshop 12-14 September 1995 Conference and Exhibition EXHIBITION Running alongside the Conference will be an exhibition on Intelligent Systems, with participants from academia and industry. For further information please contact Dr. Ali M.S. Zalzala Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering, The University of Sheffield, Mappin Street, P.O. Box 600, Sheffield S1 4DU, United Kingdom Tel: +44 (0)114 282 5250, Fax: +44 (0)114 273 1729 Email: galesia@sheffield.ac.uk WORKSHOP A workshop on Intelligent Systems: Theory and Applications will precede the Conference on 11 September 1995. The Workshop is intended for such audience from an industrial as well as academic backgrounds, and will include topics as Artificial Neural Networks, Genetic Algorithms, Knowledge-based Systems, and Parallel and Distributed Processing. While the morning session will cover theoretical issues, the afternoon will be dedicated to practical and discussion sessions. For further information, please contact the GALESIA'95 Secretariat. WORKING LANGUAGE The working language of the Conference will be English which will be used for all printed material, presentations and discussions. PROGRAMME AND REGISTRATION A provisional programme and registration form will be published a few months before the Conference, and will be sent to all who complete and return the attached form. BEST CONFERENCE PAPER AWARD This will be awarded to the best paper presented at GALESIA'95. BEST STUDENT PAPER AWARD This award is dedicated to the best scientific work conducted, authored and presented by a student working for a degree in Engineering or related fields. SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME Student IEE members and Younger IEE members presenting papers at this Conference may be eligible for IEE Scholarship to assist with the cost of registration fees and reasonable accommodation charges. VENUE The Conference will be held at the University of Sheffield in the Halifax Hall. With the Peak District National Park only minutes away, the City of Sheffield is well situated having the best surrounding countryside of any major city in the UK. In addition to Sheffield's large number of theatures, meuseums, galaries and cinemas, the newly installed supertram system will provide an excellent link to the Madowhall shopping and leisure complex nearby. The Halifax Hall will provide for both Conference activities and accommodation. Situated on the western side of the City, the Hall is an extended and renovated 1830s local Steel Baron's house which was purchased by the University in 1929. It is within easy access from different University premises and City centre, and will provide for all day-to-day requirements in addition to leisure/sport activities. SOCIAL PROGRAMME In addition to the usual Reception and Conference Dinner, an interesting social programme is planned for delegates and their companions which will include a visit to the famous Chatsworth Estate in Derbyshire and a day-out for companions. Full details will be announced in the Provisional Programme. ORGANISING COMMITTEE R. England P.J. Fleming C. Fonseca R. Patton A.M.S.
