ABSTRACT
National Tele-immersion Initiative (NTII):
Visions and Challenges
Amela Sadagic, Advanced Network & Services, Armonk, NY
The primary goal of the National Tele-Immersion Initiative (NTII) is to enable
users at geographically distributed sites to collaborate in a real/virtual
hybrid simulated environment at least as well as if they were in the same
physical room. In order to develop the technologies which will enable such
human computer interaction, the NTII community faces many challenges, the most
important of which are in the area of real time 3D environment scanning,
vision, networking, tracking and display technologies. In this talk, I will be
presenting our vision, as well as the problems we need to address on the way.
In addition, I will cover some possible future avenues.
The research that has been done so far is the result of the joint efforts of
several leading US universities that have collaborated on the Initiative for
the past two years. Advanced Network & Services has acted as a catalyst in
bringing them all together and supporting this work.
