ABSTRACT

Interacting through Websites: Why a Communication Model is Useful

Ann Light, COGS, Sussex University

Websites have become capable of supporting several kinds of interaction with users, but little analysis has gone into understanding how design models are changing with this new functionality. I will give details of a study of web users who had entered text as part of their dealings with a website of their choice, comparing response to the experience of text entry to that of using other parts of the site. The results suggest that web users operate as if involved in a conversation once entering text into dynamic web pages. The implications of this are touched on.
