ABSTRACT
THE COMPUTER GENERATION OF JOKES
Dr. Graeme Ritchie
School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh
In the past ten years or so, a number of programs have been constructed
that produce simple verbal jokes (usually puns), including novel items.
The genres covered include "Tom Swifties", punning riddles, and humorous
acronyms. After briefly discussing what the point of such work might be,
the seminar will review a few of these projects, and draw some conclusions
about the development of a small methodological paradigm for investigating
humour.
