ABSTRACT

A TOOLBOX IN MATHEMATICA FOR THE SYMBOLIC AND GRAPHICAL STUDY OF DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS

Professor John W. Perram Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute for Production Technology University of Southern Denmark, Odense

This talk reports some experiments using Mathematica notebooks integrating hypertext, symbolic computing and graphics for teaching applied mathematics in a course on Dynamical Systems. The toolbox, which was built during the course as a repository of reused code fragments, can be used for rapid study and visualisation of a large number of dynamical systems, including the Lotka-Volterra and Holling-Tanner models of competing ecosystems, the spherical pendulum, the thermodynamics of heat engines, the Lorenz model of turbulence and many others.
