ABSTRACT
Technology Integrated Learning Environments
Prof. Chris Jesshope, Department of Computer Science, Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand
This talk describes a project that brings together a wide range of
researchers with complementary skills to
develop a complete, client-server based solution for the delivery of
education at a distance. The delivery will be
web-based and will exploit multimedia that streams over modem
connections. The content will be annotated and
integrated into a comprehensive knowledge base that answers
students' questions and monitors their
progress, thus providing a flexible and adaptive tutoring
environment. Teachers will create content through easy-
to-use authoring tools making the system applicable for school,
university and continuing education. The basis of
the project is the AudioGraph tool (
http://www.nzedsoft.com), which
is already being used word-wide to develop multimedia courseware.
The basic research in the project will be in the areas of
easy-to-use multimedia authoring tools, low-bandwidth streaming,
natural-language interfaces to the courseware, and the
development of sophisticated student models and monitoring
processes. Demonstrations of components of the system will be given
in the presentation as well of results of the use of these tools in
a university environment.
