At the end of 2004, following 25 years of residence
in the Pearson Building on Gower Street, the Computer Science
Department made a move to a brand-new building to the south
of the main college campus and close to Malet Place. |
The "Malet Place Engineering Building" is the
culmination of 5 years of planning and has been designed with
the accommodation of modern technologies in mind. In addition
to the Computer Science Department it
houses the Mechanical
Engineering and Medical
Physics Departments and provides two new 80-seat lecture
theatres. These have dual data projectors, whiteboards and
video conferencing facilities. They also have network connections
for student laptops at every seat. |

There are also three seminar rooms seating between 20 and
50 people and equipped with data projection facilities, whiteboards,
and network connections.
Building accessibility is an improvement on the Pearson Building
with lift access to all floors and a stair lift to the first
floor. |

A Seminar Room
|
The Computer Science Department occupies floors 4 to 8. Facilities
include:
- A Student Common Room with chairs, tables, a coffee machine
and water cooler. In addition there are network points for
laptops and a data projector and screen for student use.
- Five meeting rooms which have data projection facilities
and a smart board.
- Six Student computer labs equipped with networked workstations.
- Wireless network access throughout the department.
Of course the move has not been without its traumas (!) but
staff and students are gradually settling in and are beginning
to enjoy the benefits of the new building. |
